This chapter begins with the Lord appearing before Abraham. Wow! Did you hear that? The Lord appeared before Abraham! To think how the God who created the universe would show Himself to mere man creates within me great awe.
Yet when Abraham looks up, he sees three men standing nearby. Clearly, something stood out about these three visitors because Abraham hurried to greet them and bowed low to the ground. But observe, Abraham did not take his time going to the Lord. Instead, he hastened and bowed low. Should not this be our own response to the Lord rather than procrastination or dragging our feet? Eagerness, immediacy, and humility should characterize our response to Him. But also notice what Abraham says next. “If I have found favor in your eyes, my Lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and go on your way —now that you have come to your servant.” (Genesis 18:3-5, NIV) I love how Abraham asks the Lord not to pass him by if he had found favor. Friends, what would our lives look like if we asked the Lord this very same thing each day? If Abraham asked God not to pass him by, we can certainly do the same. I also love how Abraham desires to serve the Lord and these men. I mean, how many of us possess the opportunity to offer the Lord food, water, and rest? Yet instead of these things, we can serve the Lord with our time, gifts, and resources. We can offer ourselves as living sacrifices. So as we go throughout this day, may we hasten to the Lord and seek Him with eagerness and humility. May we plead for Him not to pass us by and be with us. And may we serve Him wholeheartedly as living sacrifices, working for the Lord and not for men.
